Originally planned as a temporary construction, the Pathé Cinema in Rotterdam has become an icon for the city. After almost 20 years since its construction, the envelope system of the building has significantly deteriorated and does not offer any of the visual, performative or efficiency qualities that a contemporary iconic building is expected to display. This project studies a new facade model that combines low-tech mechanical systems with high-tech materials and the optimized use of physical principles, in order to improve the performance of Pathé’s envelope, while updating its appearance and reintegrating the building into its modern context.
